You could just run through the pits once to simulate a joker.

That is something I thought about but I would like keep the joker so it puts you behind the pack but close enough that you could catch and battle them if they make mistakes. Also I want to keep the race distance short. So having a joker that can be worth 30 seconds-1 minute is a bit to big for my liking
